MPPT Controller

Fixing maximum power point tracking algorithm faults.

An MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller is the most advanced type of solar charge controller, continuously tracking the maximum power point of the panels and increasing system efficiency by up to 30% compared to PWM controllers. It employs algorithms such as Perturb & Observe, Incremental Conductance, or AI-based methods to dynamically adjust input voltage and current. Internally it features a high-frequency switching buck or boost DC-DC converter, high-resolution current and voltage measurement circuits, a powerful DSP or microcontroller, and a cooling system. Common problems include the algorithm becoming stuck at a local maximum instead of the global one, sensor errors leading to incorrect power calculation, burnt power switches under overload conditions, and software faults in the tracking routine. Expert repair involves algorithm debugging through data logging, precise sensor calibration, replacement of power components and filters, firmware updates or rewriting, and performance testing under varying irradiance and temperature conditions to ensure stable and accurate maximum power point tracking.
